Hazmat Emergency Phone Numbers: Complete Contact Guide (2026)
Share
This guide covers every hazmat emergency phone number you may need — before, during, and after a chemical incident. It is organized in three sections: prevention and compliance (regulatory agencies and planning resources), immediate response (who to call during an active incident, including dedicated 24-hour hazmat hotline providers), and reporting and recovery (post-incident obligations).
Need a dedicated hazmat emergency phone number for your SDS or shipping papers?
The public agency numbers below are for regulatory reporting and general guidance. If you ship hazardous materials, DOT and IATA regulations require a separate 24-hour hazmat emergency phone number listed on your SDS and shipping papers — staffed by experts who know your specific products.

Before a Hazmat Incident: Prevention & Compliance
Department of Transportation (DOT)
Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is the DOT agency responsible for regulating and enforcing hazardous materials transportation and pipeline safety in the United States.
PHMSA's Hazmat Information Center provides live, one-on-one assistance pertaining to the federal regulations for the transportation of hazardous materials, 49 CFR.
DOT/PHMSA's Hazardous Materials Information Center: 1-800-467-4922 (Mon–Fri, 9 AM–5 PM EST)
Under 49 CFR 172.604, shippers must include a 24-hour emergency response telephone number on hazmat shipping papers — this must be a number where technically qualified personnel are available at all times during transport.
PHMSA also provides a help desk for companies that must complete the annual Hazardous Materials Registration required under 49 CFR.
HAZMAT Registration Help Desk: 202-366-4109
PHMSA has a direct line to report pipeline safety concerns, unsafe conditions, or regulatory issues involving natural gas or hazardous-liquid pipelines.
Office of Pipeline Safety Hotline: 202-366-4595
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
OSHA provides guidance on workplace safety, employee training, and hazmat compliance programs. Under OSHA HazCom (29 CFR 1910.1200), Section 1 of every SDS must include a 24-hour emergency contact number. Companies can consult an OSHA Area Office for compliance questions, safety program guidance, training requirements, hazard communication (HazCom) rules, and general workplace safety support.
